Once Upon a Time by kiki-doodle Once Upon a Time by kiki-doodle
My office’s blog tempted me with a Snow White theme. So, maybe we can just figure that now every time I want to try a new form of painting, it’ll be a Disney princess?

The iconic apple scene has been done so many times that I wanted to do something else.

I love the textures and 50s-storybook vibe you've got going here, it's very cute, and very pretty =) I don't mind the flatter background, it makes this feel as though it's on a stage. =)

Like everyone else has mentioned, the style is awesome. I like how you did away with the apple and focused on the characters love for animals. Simply beautiful. Well done!

Thank you! Yeah, I couldn't think of a unique take on the apple (for the amount of time I wanted to spend on this) So I went with a different sort of scene :)! Plus, I like adding in the animals.

I love the style of this painting! It's so unique compared to all the other styles I have seen, and the texture adds a lot of life to the scene! I love how you used your creativity to not do the apple scene!! :D This is beautiful work, I love it so much!

My absolute goal is that people will take a quick second glance at my artwork and question if it is digital. Then I have succeeded in blending the mediums :p

This one was fast. I used a method I've been doing at work to get drawings done faster. So... 3-4 hours. Roughly. Normally I would have spent longer on the background to get it to the same level as the foreground, but this was experimental in nature.

I'm loving the colours and atmosphere in this picture. I think it captures the heart of the Snow White character quite well. However, the lines on the animals going straight up from the legs to the back are a little distracting, and her hand on the ground doesn't look quite natural. I do really like the curlies on the deers elbows, ears, and tail, too.

Hey, thanks for the comment. Yours are always SO HELPFUL! ARGH!

Anyway, the leg thing is something I've been doing of sorts in a lot of my life sketches that I've liked. It's breaking down creatures into their forms and separations in a more graphic way than a literal one.
However, I think it's super helpful to see what people like and dislike :) Is there a particular reason you dislike it or find it distracting? It is the first time I've done it this dramatically, so I'm sure I need to keep working on style!

Hands... those are just one of my banes. I love them, but I have a hard time understanding them. so, I need to keep on pushing forward!

Thanks!

I think that because the leg-to-back lines were so strong on this piece, they're just really distracting. I can't keep my eyes on Snow White or the deer's faces, I just keep being drawn to stare at the deer's shoulders. Every time I glance at the picture, the first thing I land on is the male deer's shoulder, and I have difficulty browsing the rest of the picture - I have to force myself to acknowledge that anything else is there. Once I break away, I'm fine, until I let my gaze wander again, and back to the deer-shoulders it goes. As for why I'm so drawn to stare at the shoulders? I'm not sure. I'm thinking the lines just kind of section out the areas and make them look almost like panels - something that's highlighted for importance, almost?

I can totally see what you're doing, though - the sectionining out shapes of an animal thing, that is. It's not one of my favourite styles, but I'm willing to admit it CAN be done tastefully. More often than not you've accomplished a tasteful rendition of a style I'm not always fond of, actually.

Hands - yes, they are baneful. Not much more to say there. Sometimes I get along with drawing hands quite well, other times they hate me. Right now, they hate me!

As for "SO HELPFUL! ARGH!" - is that a GOOD argh or a bad one?? XD

I'm sure it's also an issues with tangents/focal points. I'll have to keep working harder :3

I love how soft this image is. It gives off a feeling of traditional rather than Digital. I think one thing that it could use though is a little more depth / variation to the trees. I would like to see some that are closer, because it just seems like there is a single row of trees surrounding her.

Love the brush work though! Did you make your own custom brushes?

Kinda.
I actually have been using the default photoshop dry media brushes; however, I then go into the brush settings and adjust the settings to reduce/increase spacing, or else add other brushes in combination.

I love Snow White's expression, and the lighting really helps draw attention to her, which I also really like.
Just as a quick suggestion, I would have personally liked to see more detail in the background; I feel it would have gotten my attention a lot more in my inbox if it was a bit more than a wall of green. Overall, though, very beautiful. :meow:

I definitely agree. I left the background much rougher than I normally would because I don't sell fanart, ever :) Even so, maybe a few more color variations, and hints of leaves and foliage would be good.

Thank you!
