Just a Moment Before... by kiki-doodle Just a Moment Before... by kiki-doodle
I'm really excited to say that I was asked to be a part of Hero Complex Gallery for a Legend of Zelda show!!
hcgart.com/
I really dig this piece I did for it!  It combines my favorite aspects of Zelda... Epona, the ocarina, and Skull Kid/Majora's Mask.

Whenever the show goes live, I'll make a journal entry!

Ok first, let me get my fawning over-with:

OMG OMG OMG BEST CONTENT EVER. I  Zelda games and good Zelda fanart.

Now for the critique:

- I really enjoy your interpretation of young Link. That he has some chubbiness to him makes him look younger (as appropriate for Majora's mask) and oh-so-adorable.
- This is just me being a stickler, there two faeries in Majora's Mask (Tatl/Tael), one was purple and the other...? I see you have a third one - Navi - correct? *hey listen!*
- It looks like you have a good grasp of horse anatomy, and that your stylized version still holds true to that. However, the horse's neck looks a little awkward - maybe too long? It may be the chest isn't deep enough in the front (or thrust further forward), or the head is a bit small. No matter, b/c of the stylized appearance, Epona still works as is :)
- I really like the way you did Skullkid, he looks alert and ready for trouble. The color and detail in the mask is great.
- I really like the soft, cool colors you used in the background. They contrast nicely with the warm colors of the characters.
What do you think?

This image is so beautiful, your style is incredible and looks so good on these characters! I especially love how the fairies and Skull Kid look.
The colors you've chosen are gorgeous and the lighting is perfect, really beautiful and light especially around Link but also with a hint of darkness that something bad is moments away.
Haha I could gush about this for hours, I've had it sitting in my inbox for so long so I can keep looking at it.

All I stared is that white fairy and I think it's Navi but same time, she joined Majora's side. Bad fairy, Bad Navi

The white and black fairy are Tatl and Tael, and the yellow one by Link is Navi!  Of course, she shouldn't be here in this scene, but I wanted to add her <3

That's make more sense now. I remember Tatl being yellow one but Tati being white fairy does helps contrast Tael's color. Thank for unconfusing me. XD

Ooof, actually, you're 100% right.  Navi is also more blue-ish!  Well this is what happens when you rely on memory :p

Your environments are splendid as always! And I really like the lines working as texture, they really add something here.

I sooort of want to try Zelda games but it seems to be one of those big series that are intimidating to jump into unless you've been playing them for years. :( Besides I'm crap at action games, the games I've been playing most in the past couple of years are Animal Crossing and Pokemon. Huh, now that I think of it while I generally like seeing original stuff more than fan art it'd be great to see your take on those series sometime!

Just look into ocarina of time, majoras mask, or wind wake and start there! The first two are redone splendidly with updated graphics on the 3ds, too!!

Honestly I love the series, but I only game once in a blue moon, so...... (I also rarely finish them, hahaa)

Same here! I prefer original, but it's fun putting existing series into my style

I was so tempted to get the 3DS edition of Majora's Mask but same - I don't game very actively and the only games I stick with are the ones with no aim, I haven't beat any of action games I own so far... So it always makes me feel like I'm wasting money - "you're buying a game you probably won't finish" - but maybe I should learn to look at it differently! I don't want to be SERIOUS about gaming and brag about levels and top scores, art is where I work hard...

I rarely finish games, but I like them for the experience!!!

I recommend the Majora's Mask 3DS game as it's a great rendition, and even if you don't finish, there is so much content to just explore and enjoy.  I haven't finished mine yet :p

Ooh, this makes me wish I snatched one of the fancy bundles when the game was released! :D I'll be getting a New 3DS this autumn (assuming I don't go broke and have to spend money I'm putting off for it) so it's a good excuse to try more games that are supposedly better on the new controls. So Majora's Mask is enjoyable even without playing the previous games? I miiight try to find Ocarina of Time but every time I ask hardcore gamers where to start with Zelda I get sent waaay back and lose my motivation to get into it. I prefer modern graphics and easier controls, to be honest, older games are usually harder to beat.

I'm a huge zelda fan, but also a person who doesn't have time to dedicate a million hours to a game system :D!

Especially if you're getting a 3DS, pick up Ocarina of Time first, then Majora's Mask.  While you can play them out of order, I feel that Majora's Mask builds upon the characters you were introduced to in Ocarina of Time (although they're all different people), and these easter eggs are really fun!

Both of these games were given incredibly high scores and are considered classics and playable to this day.  Both are ALSO remade for the 3DS, which didn't change any base gameplay, but instead updated the graphics and cleaned up a few things (one owl in particular used to talk to you for like... 10 years, and they shortened his script.)  The older NES/SNES games are nice, but harder.  I think the SNES one A Link to the Past, is the better of that bunch, and holds up well due to the sprite graphics.  I'm not a huge fan outside of aesthetics of the original NES one :p
I liked the gameboy games, but those can be skipped.  I recently played the other DS games, and while fun, they aren't as good as the n64 ones.

Skyward Sword is supposed to be one of the best modern ones, but I haven't had time to play it, yet.

If you could only get ONE game, I'd go with the 3DS Ocarina of Time, as the updated graphics should speak well to you, and I didn't have problems with the controls, plus it's renowned as one of the best.

Good to know! :D I usually find reviews of gaming sites not that useful precisely because a lot of people there are more dedicated about video games than I'll ever be...

I already have a 3DS XL, I was considering a New 3DS but since I'm used to replacing my hardware pretty much when it's barely usable it feels kind of wasteful to upgrade so soon so I keep going back and forth on that since Nintendo hasn't released any game that doesn't work on old 3DS yet and would catch my attention... :paranoid: But other than that the 3DS is the only gaming system I have and my first one (unless we count the PC but I stopped using PC for gaming years ago).

Thanks for the explanation! I'll try to pick up both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask then - that's kind of pricey since both local stores that I like refuse to drop the price for Ocarina (it just gets sold out and reappears costing the same, I've been side-eyeing that for months) but should be doable eventually! I've been itching for new video games - there's new Animal Crossing in October and Yokai Watch in (presumably) December and I'm REALLY looking forward to those but this summer has been oddly bare when it comes to games I'd want to try.

I would say to check amazon, but I just did, and the price is still high!  Woah!  I guess it's still in demand.

I have the new 3DS because I wanted a special system but... other than the nicer 3D, it's not something you need if you're not hardcore :p

WOWW this is absolutely BEAUTIFULL!! <33

Gosh you really captured the game and the characters well, and I really love the the texture you used and the way you colored. Everything about this is just very amazing. I also really like how you did the lighting and I think it really makes the characters stand out.

Awesome job with this piece,  and congratz on getting to be a part of a LoZ show!! ^^

Thanks so much!!!  Lighting is just FUN, and I am always happy to throw texture on everything.

I'm excited to be a part of the show, too!!  I just found out it's delayed by a few more months, but oh well, this just means everyone got an extra early sneak peak!
