Box Cats by kiki-doodle Box Cats by kiki-doodle
All cats love boxes; especially the big ones!  Fun, cute, and a little bit silly of an image I've on and off doodled on for a couple months.  Decided to finish it up in time for FC, and YES, prints will be available (Not on Etsy until after FC, though).

Enjoy!

I tried a slightly new technique here, and I'm curious if people are enjoying the use of partial line art that's more painted into the image than used to define everything.

This is such a delightful and unique concept! I love the different expressions and how they are all crammed in the one box, which is such typical cat behavior. I also really enjoy noticing small details like the white whiskers and the petal-like loops in their ears (the tiger especially). I think the colors blend really well together (the values of the lion's mane are lovely), and have no doubt it will be very handsome as a print.

A few minor things that bug me, after looking closely at the image: the white lines of the jaguar's cheek, neck, and right by the shoulder blade are a little too distinct, and seem a bit harsh to my eye, versus the softer lines around the tiger's neck. Another thing to possibly change would be the tiger's thinness. Right at the point where the right leg connects to the body, just below the lion's mane, is a bit off-putting, as it makes the tiger look unnaturally thin and shaped almost like an hourglass (just from the head to the paws, that the viewer can see). I think giving the tiger more of a visible chest/belly could fix that. A really nit-picking look at the lion's tail has me wanting it to curve down at the base instead of up, as right now it would seem it is stemming from its mid-back (assuming a sitting position).

Finally, a really small thing that I am not even sure is a thing would be that the shadow under the box seems a bit muddy, almost, on the left side as it flares out. It does not really bother me as much on the right side so I wonder if smoothing it out into the background more would ease my qualm with it.

Overall a wondrous and whimsical image!

I personally love the use of partial lines than fully defined ones. It gives the piece a more storybook painting and requires you to use a different color technique to define things more.

they all have such distinct designs and personalities! they could each pass for an OC. Heck, just that lion's yawning mouth could be a deviation on its own. This is stunning!

I do really like the partial line art. A little detail that I think is awesome are the balls on the ends of the whisker tapers. That really tickles me for whatever reason. I like that you are able to portray so much shape with just a few lines (the tiger and cheetah's faces, for example).

I like this partial line-art look. I think it helps to unify it more? I am bad at putting this stuff into words.
Anyway, I love how expressive you made the cats. This is so cute!

Partial lines are ok, not disturbing your style ;)...And big cats are all together are OK as well!! They all seem to have different personality not just because they are different species :)...And that's awesome!

Love the new line technique. It gives your drawings a more 3D feel while still being illustrative. That being said, go ahead and stick with whatever calls to ya, I'll enjoy it no matter what. Love love love the smiling jaguar!

I can be pretty fluid in style some times, but I keep coming back to something more like this, so I assume this means I'm happy with it :p
That said, I really love to hear what people like and do not like, as my art is sometimes just as much my livelihood as it is my soul, I guess.  Thanks for your input!

I know exactly what you mean, when an artist feels a certain way, sometimes it unintentionally comes across in the artwork. So when a person comments, we definitely value the feedback.

I've always loved the textures you're able to get in. Did you start traditionally with this one or just digital?

This one is all digital.  I work a lot with textured brushes, and have a collection of brushes I've designed to try and emulate different traditional textures I like.

I do tons of sketching and painting traditionally, though, but normally they're more of a warm up for me anymore!  This year I have it as my goal to get a few more traditional paintings done than normal (I average only a few a year.)

Ohhh man, I love that you're able to keep a traditional feel through digital work. Makes me want to work on some of my own brushes and toolsets to try and do that same, haha!

I really need to get working on traditional stuff, it's been mostly digital for me. Even traditional sketches or warmups are rare for me. I'm 100% positive you have more traditional stuff done than I do, haha!

x3 I just carry around a set of watercolor pencils and have 2 hours of commute time a day to get stuff done.

And yeah, I LOVE getting a traditional feel to my digital work.  I need to share some of my brushes some time ><  They're honestly created from a mix of Photoshop's other brushes, but they do have specific good points that work well in my method of painting.

Duuude, I'd so nosebleed over getting a peek at your brushes. I have a bunch of toolsets that work for a traditional feel, but as soon as I change to brush size, the whole brush stroke is different T^T.

And wait, what? 2 hour commute? That's hell @_@. The longest I have to drive to get anywhere is maybe 20 minutes.

well, one hour one each way, but I'm on a train, so it's kind of relaxing.  Also, if I didn't get enough sleep I just nap the whole way :p  It's the benefit of living somewhere with good public transportation.  Plus my work pays for it.

And do you mean when you adjust the size of the brush?  That can be an issue almost any time, depending on the size of the canvas you work on.  Most of my brushes are designed for 8.5x11 300 DPI, give or take, but at work, where I work at a MUCH higher size, it's sometimes difficult to get the exact texture I want, but I have to remind myself that I'll be resizing. Otherwise, if you go into brush settings, you can adjust things around until it tends to look right again :)

and Oof, I definitely need to organize my brushes and maybe cull the ones that are too similar, and name them all better :p
